FIELD: organic chemistry, more particularly synthesis of 4-alkyl-ortho-benzoquinones and 3-bromo-5-alkyl-ortho-benzoquinones. SUBSTANCE: disclosed is method of preparing above-mentioned compounds of formula I: wherein X is H or Br; R is tert--C4 H9 -tert--C5 H11 ; tert--C6 H13 ; cyclo--C6 H11 by oxidation of corresponding pyrochatechine, 4-alkylpyrocatechine or 3- bromo-5-alkylpyrocachetin in diethyl ether is stirred in excess amount of 10% aqueous solution of ferric- trichloride at room temperature, water is separated and ferric trichloride is once again added. EFFECT: simplified process, cheaper initial materials, higher process rate and higher yield of the desired products and wider range of the desired products. 1 ex, 1 tbl.
